UFLAC & LAFD Join Forces to Support Movember

(Raising Awareness for Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, Mental Health, and Suicide Prevention )

UFLAC and the LAFD will join forces to promote and support Movember during the month of November.  October was the month for women to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. Now it is time for men to step into the spotlight for Movember.

This month men around the United States and the globe are trying to raise awareness about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

The primary goal of LAFD and UFLAC’s involvement in Movember is to support those personally effected by cancer and to reach thousands of people with the lifesaving message that cancer prevention and early detection can mean the difference between life and death.

All members are authorized in the month of November to wear the newly designed Movember LAFD shirt while on duty to support Mens Health Awareness.  By this very public display, LAFD firefighters and paramedics can help to raise public awareness of these devastating health issues. We hope as many of you as possible will wear them.

Prostate Cancer Facts to Consider:

  • 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
  • Early detection is the key and can mean the difference between life and death.

Testicular Cancer Facts to Consider:

  • Testicular Cancer starts young. It’s the most common cancer in young American men.
  • Testicular Cancer has 95 percent survival rate but 1 in 20 meant doesn’t make it.

Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Facts to Consider:

  • Globally, on average 1 man dies of suicide ever minute of every day.
  • Improving Mental Health and establishing better social connections can reduce the risk of suicide.

We have a limited number of Movember T-Shirts available for a voluntary donation of $20 available at the UFLAC Office. Please call UFLAC at (213) 977-9001 for availability and sizes.

SUPPORT THE FIRST ANNUAL UFLAC FIRE FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT

Dear UFLAC Members:

Earlier this year, Local 112 formed the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City Fire Foundation to serve as our charitable arm commissioned to assist LAFD Firefighters and our families when they are in need.

Due to the amazing work of our Foundation Board and your support, we now have a foundation that we can call our own that benefits our members. Because many of the legal, communications and administrative costs are provided pro bono by our partners and volunteers, nearly all of the proceeds of the foundation will go directly to help aid our mission of supporting LAFD Firefighters and their families.

Next month, the Foundation will host our Inaugural Charitable Golf Tournament on Monday, November 4thand we are hopeful that you can support our efforts through the purchase a golf ticket. This tournament will be at the Porter Valley Country Club in Porter Ranch and it will be a shotgun start at 10:00 am. Additional details are attached.

As UFLAC members and retirees, we are offering you the opportunity to play in the tournament at a cost of $175 per person, a considerable discount off of our standard golf ticket price.  Please click HERE to download the flyer.

Because there are limited spaces available and foursomes are filling up fast, we would ask that you sign up by contacting Foundation Chairman Adam Walker at [email protected]or (661) 510-5218.

Thank you for your help and participation in this important inaugural event and we look forward to seeing you on November 4th. If you have questions, please contact any of us on the Executive Board.  Thank you.

In solidarity,

UFLAC Executive Board

UFLAC & LAFD Join Forces to Support

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

UFLAC and the LAFD have joined forces to promote and support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Our primary goal is to support those personally affected by cancer and to reach thousands of people with the lifesaving message that cancer prevention and early detection can mean the difference between life and death.

During the month of October, all members are authorized to wear the newly designed pink LAFD shirt while on duty to support Breast Cancer Awareness.  By this very public display, LAFD Firefighters and Paramedics can help to raise public awareness of this devastating disease. We hope as many of you as possible will wear the pink T-shirt.

Breast Cancer Facts to Consider:

  • Breast Cancer incidents in LA County are three times higher that that of the next leading cancer
  • Second leading cause of mortality among Caucasian, African American, and Asian/Pacific Islander females
  • Leading cause of mortality among Latina / Hispanic women in LA County
  • Late diagnosis carries a survival rate of less than 7%
  • Early diagnosis and treatment has a survival rate of over 91%
  • #1 mortality rate of females between 21-40 years of age in LA County

All net proceeds will go to UFLAC Fire Foundation to support LAFD families battling this devastating disease. Pink LAFD/UFLAC T-Shirts can be ordered at www.fdthreadz.com/pink or call the UFLAC office directly at (213) 977-9001 ext. 1
